Dryer’s Buying Guide

It used to be fairly easy to buy a new dryer because there were only a few varieties manufactured by a handful of different companies. However, that has changed nowadays. That’s because there are not only new companies producing dryers, but these dryers are full of new technologies. All of which can make it difficult for the average person to find the best dryer for their needs.

Fortunately for our readers, we’ve decided to create a handy guide that will help the average person find the dryer they need for their needs, and this is that guide. So sit back, relax, and find out what you should be looking for when you’re purchasing a new dryer.

Step One: Decide On Electric Or Gas

Although just about all of the dryers on our above list are electric because they’re the ones most universally used, some people actually prefer using gas dryers or only have hookups to use gas dryers. Gas dryers do also have their benefits which usually include a lower cost of running it and quicker heating times. However, electric models are usually easier to hook up and are usually the most portable models available.

Step Two: Choose A Size

Another important thing that potential dryer buyers should consider is the size of the machine. Since not all people have the same needs when it comes to drying their laundry, this is something that a consumer is really going to want to think about. Some people may need to do large loads of laundry, so they may need a 27 up to a 29-inch dryer. If they need a large dryer but don’t have a whole lot of space, then they might want to consider buying a model that’s a part of a stackable washer/dryer set.

Drum size is also an important consideration. The average drum capacity is anywhere between 5.25 and 7 cubic feet.  A good rule of thumb to figure out how much of a drum capacity you need is to double the capacity of your washer. However, consumers who frequently wash oversized bedding may want to opt for an even larger dryer.

If you don’t have a whole lot of space in your home, then you may want to consider getting a portable dryer. These dryers are small enough to fit in dorm rooms, efficiency apartments, RVs or even on boats. However, it’s important to realize that because of their compact size, they usually only have a capacity of between 1.5 cubic feet and 3.75 cubic feet, which is approximately half the load size of most standard dryers.

Step Three: Choose Dryer Features

The next thing the consumer is going to want to figure out are what features they want their new dryer to have. Nowadays, there are a ton of different features that either make dryers easier to use, make them more energy efficient to use or expand their capabilities in some way. Below are some of the more common features that can be found on some models.

Stainless Steel Drums

Of all the features on this list, stainless steel drums are probably the one most people are going to want to consider. That’s because models that have stainless steel drums are more durable than ones that have plastic drums.

Moisture Sensor

Another thing to consider is whether the dryer has a moisture sensor or not. Moisture sensors prevent the dryer from overdrying your clothing. Not only can overdrying damage sensitive clothing, but it also wastes energy. Fortunately, most Energy Star Compliant dryers already have moisture sensors built into them.

Electronic Controls

Electronic controls make it quite easy to work the dryer, so it’s something that consumers may want to consider. Electronic controls also allow the dryer to be set more precisely than analog controls. And illuminated electronic controls allow the dryer to be operated without having to turn the light on.

Drum Lights

A drum light on the dryer can also make it extremely easy to operate the dryer in low-light conditions.

Variable Settings

Being able to control the temperature and the cycle of the dryer can be extremely important to ensure that clothes are properly dried without being damaged.

See-Through Window

Models that have see-through windows on either their lids or doors makes it extremely easy for the user to see what exactly is going on inside their dryer.

NSF-Certification

If the consumer expects the dryer to not only dry clothes but kill germs and bacteria too, then they may want to purchase an NSF-certified dryer. These type of dryers are capable of destroying up to 99% of all household bacteria and germs, so the user can keep their clothes as clean as possible. Although most dryers will kill some germs and bacteria when used on high-heat, only NSF-certified models do it effectively.
